Two young, religious women engage in a game of cat and mouse in a strange man’s home. The final result includes the following statement: “Generative Alt was not used in the creation of the film.” Heretic is as unpredictable as it is messy. Although he is on top for most of the film, the plot begins to falter in the final act. Hugh Grant gives a great performance, Sophie Thatcher and Cloe East also shine in his role. The director, cinematographer and set designer also deserve kudos for slowly immersing themselves in the increasing madness of Grant’s character and his haunted house. Unfortunately, the plot is the film’s weakest point. The suspense and mystery builds nicely at first, but about two-thirds in it starts to unravel. The climax was a little disappointing as I was expecting something deeper. Nevertheless, the 'heretics' a great horror film of its kind – enjoyable but not as memorable as I’d hoped.
