Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings
Tale
An epic drama set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings follows a cast of familiar and new characters as they face the long-feared return of evil to Middle-earth. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power cast and other actors who completely transformed for their roles. Amazon’s original pitch for the television rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels proposal was for the series to be a re-adaptation of the latter (actually a retelling of Gospodar prstenova: Prstenova družina (2001), Gospodar prstenova: Dvije kule (2002) and Gospodar prstenova: Povratak kralja (2003)), but Tolkien’s estate rejected this proposal.
in which they could embed their story
Amazon eventually acquired the rights on the condition that the series be different from Peter Jackson’s previous adaptations and that nothing contradicts Tolkien’s previous works. Initial ideas included backstory stories with characters like Aragorn, Gimli, and Gandalf, but the show’s writers wanted to focus on important, untold events from the novels rather than simple plots, so they agreed with the studio that the series should developed during the Second Age of Books. Since they did not have the rights to Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, The Unfinished Tales, and The History of Middle-earth (which cover the First and Second Ages), they scoured the Lord of the Rings novels and supplements for passages and references to the Second Age. They consulted the estate and several Tolkien experts (including grandson and author Simon Tolkien) about the inclusion of new characters and plot elements. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion
incorrectly listed as ‘Durin II’. The opening credits are a musical sequence of matter taking various forms based on the creation myth The Music of the Ainur by J.R.R. Featured in The Critical Drinker: The Rings of Power – War For A Fandom (2022). We all know that liberties were taken with this series, so my review is not based on fidelity to the original. Much of the marketing for this series made people fear that it would be “woke”.
I have never seen such a thing
I didn’t roll my eyes or flinch at any displays of virtue. The pacing is a little uneven at times, but since it’s the beginning of the series, I almost expect a little lag. There’s a lot to set up and introduce, etc… However, the characters and story are compelling, the cinematography is well done, and the score seems to fit… so I’m really excited to see where the series goes.
Definitely give it a shot and decide for yourself
