Lela works with her mother, Siti, as a beach sweeper before the funeral
Tale
Lela, a funeral director, struggles to uncover the truth behind her mother’s mysterious death, haunted by ghosts and weighed down by the weight of unspeakable secrets. Lela is reluctant to continue in this family profession while her brother takes on other jobs.
When one of Siti’s friends mysteriously dies, she is disturbed
This is followed by Siti’s death, which shakes Lela and she realizes that these mysterious deaths were actually murders. As she decides to investigate, another lady dies, all of whom belong to her mother’s group of friends.
This is the rest of the story
As the families refuse to let the police intervene, Lela takes it upon herself to gather the evidence to prove these deaths were murders and put an end to them. Will she be able to save the village?
The performances were pretty good, and I wish there were more of these women
The film’s main strength lies in how it uses its female characters, and the film’s defining moment is the rumor they spread, which immediately elevates the story. Aside from the supernatural angle, the narrative is kept grounded by occasional jump scares, and the police’s aloofness seemed intentional.
The flashbacks are only brief, and we never get to fully learn Nur’s story
It probably would have made the film more generic with the good-vs-evil angle, but at least it would have answered the main question rather than leave it unanswered. Corpse Washer is a decent watch, helped along by a good performance from the lead actress.
